Introduction

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N9005) from Telstra can be rooted without burning KNOX ( https://www.samsungknox.com/ ) if it is running baseband version N9005XXUDMJ7 using Towelroot. This can be checked under:

Settings -> General -> About device -> Baseband version

Step 1: Download and run TowelRoot

Go to this address in the browser on the phone:

https://towelroot.com/

Click the lambda (lil' A looking thing) to download tr.apk ( LOCAL MIRROR (latest as of 2014-09-14): tr.apk ) and install it. You'll need to turn on installing from unknown sources of course. Now run TowelRoot.

Step 2: Verify root

To verify you have root, you can install Root Verifier ( https://f-droid.org/ ) either through the f-droid store, or just downloading the APK from the F-Droid website.

Step 3: Verify KNOX

Now verify KNOX is intact. To do this, turn off the phone, and hold down the "Volume down" button, the Select button, and then hold the Power button until it boots.

A "Warning!!" screen will appear. Press the "Volume up" button. A "Downloading..." screen will now appear, and at the top it will say something like:

ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SM-N9005
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Custom
REACTIVATION LOCK: OFF
KNOX KERNEL LOCK: 0x0
KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0
QUALCOMM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE (CSB)
AP SWREV: S2, T2, R2, A2, P2
WRITE PROTECTION: Enable

The 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID' value should still be 0x0.

Step 4: Install SU

Now install an SU tool. Two such tools are:

Super SU ( http://download.chainfire.eu/ )

Superuser ( https://f-droid.org/ )
